The Bellies, Birth and Babies (Fair) much BIGGER this year!

The Comox Valley Doulas are hosting their second annual Bellies, Birth and Babies Fair this May 29th at the Florence Filberg Center in Courtenay. From 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, this year’s fair will feature over 30 island based vendors and many workshops. Admission is free for everyone!

Sarah Hoffman and Monica Hofer, both certified childbirth and parenting educators will be offering a sampling of their Birthing From Within workshops. The labyrinth is an ancient, universal symbol representing our journey through life, ordeals and initiations and has long been associated with birth and rebirth, so it’s the perfect symbol to “map” the journey through pregnancy, labour and postpartum. In this workshop, the labyrinth symbol will be used and transformed through birth art, journaling and other forms of creative exploration.

Want to learn how to capture your beautiful baby belly in plaster of Paris? Jordan Guignard, a certified breastfeeding coach, prenatal instructor, and doula will be demonstrating this art with an expectant mom. Learn how to do this for yourself at home!

Michelle Hughes, Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Comox Valley Acupuncture, focuses on women's reproductive health, fertility and pregnancy support and will teach participants the acupressure points that can help reduce the pain of contractions and help support a woman through labour. Bring your labour support person, friend or come learn for yourself in this hand’s on 45 minute workshop.

Once baby is born however, you may need strategies to calm and sooth your infant. Samantha Schneider will be sharing her extensive experience, research, demo models, and strategies for “wearing your baby.” Learn about a variety of baby carriers available, their pros and cons, and hear about the many advantages of wearing your baby. Kirsten Werner, a registered massage therapist, doula and mother of two will provide a workshop on the many benefits of baby massage including: improved infant-parent attachment, relaxation leading to better sleep, body awareness, improved digestion and much more.

So you can enjoy these and other great workshops, enrol your children in our free childcare area to do crafts or play. Check out artwork by Kate Hansen, beautiful photos by McKinnon Photography, or products and services of Firefly New Beginnings, Daisychain, Podlings Custom Fit Bras, and Koochie Koo Baby products. For a healthy home, visit Norwex Enviro or Organic Family Natural Home presenters.

If self care and health care are your interests, be sure to visit the tables of Living Room Pharmacy, Inner Harmony Healing, Grace Cosmetics, Harbourview Therapeutic massage and more. There are many educational support groups to join such as Baby Talk, Healthy Families, La Leche league, VIHA Public Health Nursing, and of course, both Comox Valley Midwifery and Plum Midwifery. And last but not least, you can come meet the Comox Valley Doulas themselves. Doulas will have identifying name tags and will be available for questions, information and support throughout the day.

Yes, there is much more to this year’s bigger and better Bellies, Birth and Babies Fair and that is thanks to our many sponsors, including Island Parent Magazine, Our Big Earth, Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children, Klitsa Signs, Sure Copy, and Comox Valley Record. These vendors and sponsors have offered several amazing door prizes, which will be drawn all day long! To learn more about the fair or about Comox Valley Doulas, contact cvbbbfair@gmail.com.
