"New Mid-Island Doula - Melanie Young"

I am a birth doula and a childbirth educator. In these roles I support you and your family during pregnancy, birth and the early days of life with your new baby.

The skills I have learned come from many years of working with and supporting women during birth but this knowledge is ancient and this role is traditional. My role does not replace the care of your midwife, doctor or obstetrician but I simply become part of your intimate group of experienced professionals who understand your needs and can witness and share your experience. I work with healthcare providers and for families and connect the care provided to you in a meaningful way.

As a doula, I focus on your physical and emotional needs during the birth of your baby, from beginning to end and a little while after. From the first sign that labour has begun to the first few hours of life with your new baby, I can offer guidance and support, tips and tricks and calm, thoughtful ideas to give you and your baby a confident start.

Thirty years ago, in the north of England, I became a nurse then a midwife, working in the community. I took my childbirth education courses with Britain’s National Childbirth Trust, America’s International Centre for Childbirth Education and with Sheila Kitzinger. In Canada, Penny Simpkin was my doula trainer and guide and Doulas of North America keep me up to date with current practices. My recent career in Ontario allowed me to manage an obstetrical department in a busy community hospital where our practices remained rooted in holistic birth choices.

As time marches on and my own children move on, I find I am just as connected to birth as ever before. My experiences and my observations have given me the wisdom and maturity to know that birth is one of the four human powers that brings us into relation with our world, the others being knowledge, love, and faith. A potent combination.

Helping you in your home or in your hospital, with vaginal birth or cesarean birth, choosing breast feeding or bottle feeding, with your
first baby or last baby, whether you are embracing birth or anxious about birth, if you have positive memories or difficult stories, this one thing I do know...

“Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers - strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and
know their inner strength”...

...and with this, I can help you. Happily serving Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Courtenay and all points in between.
